Probate for People with International Assets

Presented by Jay Rosenbaum and Sarah Richards of Nixon Peabody.

If you or a client has multiple citizenships or residences or assets in multiple countries, your executor (or you, if you are the executor) may face a variety of complications in the settlement of the estate.

  • Where should the Will(s) be probated?
  • Is the Will valid in all relevant jurisdictions?
  • Should there be a separate Will for each jurisdiction where there are assets?
  • Is probate required in all jurisdictions where there are assets?
  • What if there is no Will – which country’s laws of succession take precedence?
Come to this discussion to learn which steps to take in the administration of an estate with cross-border assets, and problems to avoid.
